The Future Of Work Is Now - SAP Future Factor

The Future Of Work Is Now: "Far beyond collaboration, the digitization of work determines how we work and engage people. Technologies – such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, analytics, and cloud technologies – change the way we recruit, develop talent, and make our workforce more inclusive. They also introduce new jobs, largely with different skill set requirements. Some of the most-wanted jobs today did not exist five years ago – and many jobs we wouldn’t even imagine today will arise in the near future. Our workplace is changing at light speed.

Revelation Software Concepts Announces First Major Enhancement to Rev-Trac 7

SPS01 strengthens Release Management Workbench, expands support for SAP S/4 HANA,
and deepens integration with the Salt custom code database

Melbourne, AU - November 15, 2016Revelation Software Concepts Pty Ltd (RSC), a pioneer and market leader in simplifying SAP change control, today announced the release of their first major enhancement (SPS01) to version 7 of their flagship SAP change control automation software, Rev-Trac. The SPS01 update includes many features that strengthen Rev-Trac 7’s Release Management Workbench, supports all aspects of SAP S/4 HANA change management and further leverages the custom code database of RSC’s Salt SAP change intelligence software.
“This service pack provides important foundational improvements to Rev-Trac’s popular Release Management Workbench, but it’s Rev-Trac’s expanded integration with Salt’s custom code database that excites our Rev-Trac customers,” said David Drake, RSC Founder and CEO.
“The current release introduces Peripheral Object Dependency Checking and includes API integration points for further Salt and Rev-Trac Java integrated enhancements we’ll make available in the foreseeable future.”

Highlights include:

  1.  Updates to the Release Management Workbench focus specifically on release and change status synchronization, and adds the capability of synchronizing any request type including non-SAP requests.
  2. Request level explicit dependencies will allow for an organization to define the sequence of migration for entire Rev-Trac change requests, treating each of their subordinate transports as a group that can be sequentially controlled.
  3. Source-specific cloning allows a single request to manage the replication and retrofit of changes to multiple applications, using a single Rev-Trac clone request.
  4. SPS01 expands Rev-Trac’s SAP S/4 HANA support by including both native and non-native (non-ABAP) changes.
  5. As the first in a series of Rev-Trac features improving the integrity of changes delivered across multiple complex or hybrid SAP landscapes, the new Peripheral Object Dependency Check, or POD Check, helps teams avoid problematical outcomes from moving changes or releases forward without required dependent object versions.
The full press-release can be viewed here.

BPC & FICO Configuration

Read full article at BPC Consultant Blog: "SAP BPC is handling, by default, the so-called Bottom-Up planning by using the hierarchy capabilities of the Dimensions. It is normal planning scenario where departments plan on the lowest level and later it is aggregated to a company and group level. It is nothing special and nobody will be surprised by that. However, sometimes you might be asked how to do a Top-Down Planning in SAP BPC. Top-Down Planning is characterized by setting a target budget of a Company or Sub-Group level which is later allocated to the business units underneath. By default, SAP BPC can hold data only …"

SAP and Repetitive Manufacturing

"As you are probably well aware, SAP functionality includes a model that's called Repetitive Manufacturing or SAP-REM. It's just that only few customers use it even though, I believe, it is a wonderful fit for many things managers would like to do. That is why for the past 10 years or so, I have personally invested a very large amount of time to figure out.
  1. how the REM module in SAP is functioning
  2. what the developers had in mind and why they created it
  3. why SAP using customers, large and small, use it only marginal or not at all
  4. why SAP, as an organization, has shown little, if any interest to get this great functionality out there to the user to automate, simplify and increase efficiency.
You might say "we're not a repetitive manufacturer" and there lies one of the fundamental problems with the non-adoption of SAP-REM: a widespread mental model of believing that if a product is customized or has some sort of variants, its production can't be repetitive. I beg to differ.

The persistent objections I receive in years of pushing for REM, which was far ahead of all lean and agile ideas, has lead me to avoid the term 'repetitive'. I do not suggest anymore that my customer should activate their materials for 'repetitive manufacturing' anymore. Much rather I ask them if they'd like to run their production schedule by a 'takt' and pursue serialized manufacturing. Then I suggest a rhythm wheel, heijunka or drum, buffer, rope scheduling methods and all ears are wide open.

Yes, I know you can create a heijunka schedule with discrete orders and connect an assembly line with direct production and collective orders but why using a work-around when you've got the perfect tool in hand? Do you eat your soup with a fork?

If you want to know more about what SAP can do for flow, low wip, short cycle times and lean manufacturing look into SAP-REM. If you make one-off, engineered and highly customized, very large projects REM probably isn't for you, but for everybody else I take on bets, if you let me discuss it with you.

Just recently I worked with a maker of power transformers which are made uniquely to each and every customer. In the end they're making power transformers and the steps to build one are the same every time. If you create a standard route and allow for a takt with enough time to allow for work to happen at each station, you can place any transformer in the schedule. Building aircraft is similar. Even though each A320 might have a different cabin configuration, to build one requires the same steps and approximate working time in each takt. So why not planning ahead, reserving time on the line (capacity) and letting the specific configuration drop into the schedule at the time the customer has defined it?

It's serial (don't say repetitive) production.  Don't you agree? Yes, I know, that company that makes A320s (or the company that makes transformers) think of themselves as an engineering company. But they're also a serial (don't say repetitive) manufacturer of products with customized options. They have a department that engineers great products, however, when they start offering the product to the customer, they move into serial production - no matter how much customization they allow.

And serial (or should I say repetitive?) production is best flowing when you schedule it into a takt that matches your customer demand. Think about it the next time you're trying to figure out how to meet the customer promise date or when you walk through your plant and try to figure out why you have all this WIP lying around.

Wouldn't you want to see your orders flow along a lean schedule?" Uwe Goehring

SAPVoice: How Apple Will Win Big In Enterprise

SAPVoice: How Apple Will Win Big In Enterprise: "You probably don’t associate Apple with disruption in the insurance industry. Apple has been on the cutting-edge of consumer innovation for so long that it’s difficult for many people to see Fortune 500’s No. 1 most profitable company as anything other than the maker of the iPod (which first launched 15 years ago last week) and subsequent blockbusters, the iPhone and iPad. “Investors have been slow to shift their view of Apple as a volatile hardware maker, vulnerable to the fluctuations of the consumer electronics market,” Financial Times stated Tuesday, “rather than a software company with stable recurring revenues.” But Apple pulled in about $26 billion (or about 10 percent of its revenue) last year from enterprise, according to Apple employees speaking to SAP customers and partners at the SAP Digital Insurance Innovation Summit at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters this month. And we’ll keep seeing big things as Apple and SAP continue their partnership to transform your mobile experience at work by uniting native apps for iPhone and iPad with the SAP HANA platform." Common ERP Selection and Implementation Errors | The PSSI Blog

"Rick Cook writes about computers and ERP from time to time on Toolbox.com.  Recently he posted some comments about “ERP Implementation Errors for SMEs” that we thought worth sharing. Cook notes that small businesses are different from large ones in that they often lack the experience, expertise and resources necessary for a good ERP implementation.  As a result, they often make mistakes.  At the same time, notes Cook, in some areas, big and small companies are the same, in that some activities require just as much work from the small firm as from the large.

Odoo (OpenERP) vs SAP

"As a former employee of a company implementing Odoo (OpenERP) I had some knowledge about it and probably I am one of the few who had experience with both Odoo and SAP. To be honest, I felt in love with OpenERP about 1.5 years ago. At first, it looked astonishing, and now it looks even more appealing. There are plenty of features that everyone will like. It feels simple and easy to use and in most cases the necessary training for the end-users is lower than most business solutions.
Odoo is gaining fans which is critical success factor for open source project while in the same time SAP is growing, but in minor steps. So probably you will think why I left Odoo environment and went to SAP which feels old, ugly and has steep learning curve. The primary reason was the limited out of the box functionalities, bugs and absence of opportunities for heavy specialized financial professionals like me.  Let me try to show you some of my thoughts regarding this comparison." Reorder Point Procedure or PD with Safety Stock?

Have you ever wondered why planners tend to rather use a safety stock with MRP Type 'PD' to buffer variability, as opposed to a reorder procedure? Oftentimes PD is used across the board and no one wants to bother with another MRP type. However, with SAPs standard configuration the safety stock doesn't serve as a planning buffer and the additional inventory ends up being dead stock.

Make To Stock vs. Make to Order

Make to stock (MTS) vs. Make to order (MTO) - What do they mean?

In a Make To Stock environment production is triggered based mainly on forecasted demand, and any receipt from the production line is put into inventory (where customer orders are ultimately fulfilled from). A couple of scenarios to consider:
  • We receive a customer order 2 months before it needs to be delivered. i.e. We have an open Sales Order that shows in MD04. This order will not trigger a production process.
  • We receive a very large customer order today and do not have enough inventory to fulfill it? We'll have to wait until the next period produces enough product and tell the customer to wait... This is because what is produced this period is for customer orders requesting product in the next period.

Internet of Trains: SAP kits Trenitalia trains with hundreds of sensors | IT PRO

"Trenitalia reboots maintenance and engineering using the IoT, which partner SAP believes is a sign of the next industrial revolution.
The sunny Italian countryside rattles by at 350km an hour, but it’s not the speeds alone that make Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa trains impressive – it’s the hundreds of sensors beaming 5,000 data points a second into the cloud.
Trenitalia is working with SAP to harvest and process that data to completely reimagine train maintenance. At the moment, trains are pulled off the rails for a check-up after a certain number of kilometres or a set amount of time – not unlike taking your car in for an MOT. That takes trains out of service even when they don’t have a fault, costing Trenitalia unnecessarily. By slapping sensors onto every measurable component or part – from the engine to the passenger Wi-Fi – the Italian train firm hopes to not only be able to switch to maintenance when necessary, rather than at a set time, but to predict problems and fix them before they start. “It’s a new way to approach maintenance, better understand the business and intervene when necessary,” said Barbara Morgante, CEO of Trenitalia."

SAP Screen Personas and SAP Fiori

What is SAP Screen Personas?

At its highest level, it may be understood as a skin which sits over a SAP GUI. Much simpler than the old SAP GuiXT. SAP Screen Personas, has benefits in that it is easy to configure, can have multiple transactions represented in the underlying screen. It has a graphical interface which looks superb. It can sit on top of any one of the 16,000 SAP GUI screens, it can work on your own custom transactions that work through a SAP GUI. It does not work on screens which use SAP WEB Dynpro.

What is SAP Fiori?

This is the new strategic direction of the user experience in SAP. Its background on initial development was interesting in that it was outsourced to a cluster of specialist designers to create a design framework for all future apps and screens. The result was an initial pilot of around 18 SAP Fiori Apps, which then grew in quick succession to now approximately 300 applications, after the latest SAP Fiori release (wave 3). They run through a HTML5 browser on your mobile device (or any web enabled device), you log in to SAP through the device and access a single app per function. The apps call services in SAP and provide results in real time. They do not have offline access. (This is planned through the SAP mobile platform, currently under development enhancement).

Early users of SAP IoT platforms report real business benefits

"One manufacturer said sensors connected to an internet gateway enable it to find efficiencies in improved asset management and share data with its customers -- just like SAP IoT marketing promised.

Software vendors are constantly leaping ahead of -- and playing catch up to -- their users' real business needs, and with the internet of things, SAP is right in the thick of it. The company is working a variety of angles to support its customers who are already using IoT-based systems, while it is also prepping for a future wave of SAP IoT implementations.
But what are SAP IoT users really up to right now? Which industries are moving faster than others? Where are they finding value? "There are three kinds of use cases that we're typically seeing," said Nayaki Nayyar, general manager and global head of IoT and innovation go-to-market at SAP. "One is what we call industrial customers -- customers with heavy manufacturing looking to optimize operations cost, maintenance cost and turnaround time." Read more...

The study found that the enterprises using SAP Jam reported a combined net present value (NPV) of more than 19 million dollars and an ROI increase of 11 percent from a previous study in 2015. The results speak to the possible transformations and long-term financial benefits business enterprises using SAP Jam could experience. SAP Jam can help businesses through social collaboration rooted in business value, by providing a centralized, cloud-based platform that can help make it easier to find and share information, reduce the time it takes for sales to close deals, improve the speed of onboarding new employees and cut the response time of support organizations.

SAP S/4 HANA – the numbers and the business case – diginomica

By Den Howlett (diginomica) - "So much has been said and written about SAP S/4 HANA it is almost passé as a topic of conversation. But there have been two consistent themes that have concerned/confused readers, analysts and customers:
  1. What do the numbers mean?
  2. How does the business case make sense?
In SAP’s defense, the answers to both those questions have been available, they’ve just been hard to tease out in a coherent manner. So it was with that in mind that I was given the opportunity to discuss these points directly with Markus Schwartz, SVP and general manager, S/4 HANA.

Awareness Improving But Security Still Lags For SAP Implementations

By Ericka Chickowski "SAP ecosystem a huge Achilles heel for enterprise system security, report says. While SAP makes some of the most business-critical applications used by enterprises today, it has taken some time for the IT world to get serious about securing SAP infrastructure. In the wake of a several high-profile incidents involving SAP over the past year -- and an increasing focus by analysts on SAP defense issues -- SAP awareness is at an all-time high in 2016. But the statistics show that there's a lot of work to do in order to turn that awareness into meaningful protection for business-critical applications.

TIP: Generate a Unique index for Parameter values in SAP EM

Problem Statement

SAP EM stores attribute values as name value pairs (called Parameters). There are certain instances where you need to hold multiple values for the same attribute / parameter. For example, a shipment event handler can be tracked using multiple tracking Numbers. And at a later stage some of the tracking numbers become obsolete and need to be removed from the event handler. In these scenarios, not knowing the right index to remove the applicable parameters becomes very difficult and inefficient in terms of performance.

SAP Emphasizing Internet Of Things

SAP Emphasizing Internet Of Things

  • "Since early 2016, SAP has been increasing focus on the Internet of Things segment.
  • It is working on offerings that will be able to support customers already using IoT-based systems, and it is also working on a future wave of SAP IoT implementations.
  • Earlier last month, SAP announced the acquisition of Norwegian company Fedem Technology AS, which would be its first strategic IoT acquisition.
After the announcement of Brexit last quarter, many were worried about the performance of Europe-based companies. Recently reported second quarter results by ERP leader SAP (NYSE:SAP) appear to have put those concerns to rest. After delivering rather lackluster results in the first quarter, SAP delivered very strong second quarter results that sent the stock soaring to 52-week high levels."

Interview with Alicia Tillman, CMO at SAP Ariba

Interview with Alicia Tillman, CMO at SAP Ariba:
"1. Could you tell me a little about your background and how you came to be the CMO at SAP Ariba?
Prior to joining SAP Ariba, I spent 11 years at American Express operating in a similar capacity, leading Marketing and Corporate Communications, in the company’s business travel division. I recently celebrated my one year at SAP Ariba after joining last spring. My desire to join SAP Ariba was driven by a fierce desire by our company President to double the size of the business in the next five years. That goal would call for change – and Marketing would be part of that. While SAP Ariba is the market leader in their space, doubling our business would require refreshed messaging, brand elements and awareness. I was very interested to lead that for SAP Ariba.

Software Maker SAP Ditches Annual Reviews

Software Maker SAP Ditches Annual Reviews: "Germany’s SAP, maker of software used to grade the performance of millions of employees worldwide, is ditching its own annual performance reviews as too expensive, time-consuming, and often demotivating.
Once championed by business leaders as the key to better productivity, annual appraisals are falling out of fashion with companies including IBM, Gap, and even General Electric, whose longtime chief executive Jack Welch is credited with popularizing the system."
The slant made by some media outlets implies that SAP doesn't believe in the processes covered by it's own solution. In fact, many companies are moving away from the Annual Review system, including my own. We just believe that it focuses more on the negative and is reactive in nature... SAP has a similar belief.

Letter: SAP remains committed to Newtown Square HQ

Letter: SAP remains committed to Newtown Square HQ:
"To The Times:
There has been some concern over recent media coverage in the Philadelphia area suggesting that SAP has plans to move our North America headquarters from Newtown Square to New York City. This has understandably raised concerns and angst for some and I want to address it directly and set the record straight. Later this year, SAP will be opening a beautiful new office in New York City. We’re in the process of renovating our space in Chicago, we’ve opened a new office in Atlanta, and rolled out a brand new location in Boston. These are just a few examples of our continuous efforts to improve and better align our real estate footprint across North America to our business needs and growth plans. The new location in the prestigious Hudson Yards development in Manhattan will unite all of our existing New York locations into one. But what it won’t do is alter our presence or footprint here in Newtown Square."

Thoughts on Digital Transformation - Steve Lucas

A great read Posted by Steve Lucas
Digital Economies: As economies (or marketplaces) evolve, they become more efficient over time. Any economist will tell you that. What is clear to me is that the next frontier of efficiency for all global economies is digital and driven by ones and zeroes, regulated by hyper efficient algorithms all of which will be modeled, executed and continually optimized in real time. In a Digital Economy, a very real currency is the data exchanged between entities, not just goods, services and monetary funds in the traditional sense. You need to look no further than the Financial Services “economy” to get a glimpse of what your industry will look like in a very short period of time.

User Exit - Explicit Enhancement Point

"When an enhancement is used inside a custom program without disturbing the source code, it is called Explicit enhancement. Here the program is not SAP standard one. That is why it is called explicit. If it is standard one then it will be called implicit. We already have covered the implicit enhancement. Explicit enhancement is saved in a package and transport in a similar way of implicit enhancement. Explicit enhancement has two types.
  1. Enhancement Point – when we use point, we can add additional functionality to the original program. Here the original program executes with enhanced function.
  2. Enhancement Section – when we use section, the original program is not executed. The enhanced program is executed.

In the following example we have demonstrated an explicit enhancement point. In this program originally we have printed the output of a program with no header information. Now we create an explicit enhancement point where the header information has been implemented. Hence the final output shows the complete output of the Airline information." - Author:

Supply Chain KPI Described - Throughput

This is an old blog post we found authored by Pino Villa (http://sapscminfo.blogspot.com/) - Still worth a read...

Generally most KPI are a waste of time and effort. Most are ‘so what’ KPI. They are isolated KPI that do not contribute to real business benefits. Some are mainly output related rather than throughput related; Example case is inventory versus throughput.

The key difference is that throughput is based on what is actually billed and delivered, while output is something produced and sitting in inventory providing zero value to the organization. Fundamentally throughput relates to cash flow, productivity and profitability; the key elements of any success factor of an organization.

Having throughput as a KPI measure provides the ability for any organization to achieve its goal; the goal of being profitable and ability to grow. The rest has no relevance.

SAP Hybris chooses Sydney for third global data centre

"SAP Hybris has selected Sydney for its third global data centre, its first in the Asia-Pacific region and its first to be built since 2013. Company president Carsten Thoma formed Hybris as an e-commerce start-up in the dotcom boom before it was acquired by SAP in 2013, and said he recognised Australia was ahead of much of the world for digital transformation. “That’s something that became very obvious to us, even before the SAP transaction,” Mr Thoma told The Australian. “The reason in particular was also obvious. You’re a huge continent, a huge country with some large metropolitan areas and then rural areas that you have to bridge with automation and technology. “Australia’s one of the key areas for us and we want to double down on our investment there, and double down on our technology partnerships.”" - View full article here
