Using Blockchain to Build Your Dream House

"Distributed ledger technology, otherwise known as blockchain, can significantly simplify bank guarantees and guarantees of insurers, reducing paperwork while providing time-saving transparency for financial institutions and their customers. I saw an example of an interesting scenario at the recent SAP Financial Services Innovation Summit held at the SAP Leonardo Center in New York. SAP’s Stefan Schmidt recently shared a blockchain POC called The Guarantee Network on Blockchain Stefan Schmidt, Innovation Manager at SAP for Insurance, walked the audience through a blockchain POC called The Guarantee Network on Blockchain. Running on SAP Cloud Platform, it depicted how the various parties involved in new building construction – contractor, bank, insurer and buyer – could use digital certification to share information quickly, obtain necessary signatures and approvals, and prevent fraud." SAP EM : Things to look out for when implementing SAP EM

I recently came across a SAP EM Implementation with one of my clients, where they had SAP EM implemented by one of the best consulting companies but turned out to be a complete disaster.

They have N number of issues as listed below:

  1. One EH having Multiple Values for the same TRACKING ID CODE SET - which is causing incorrect events being posted on EH's
  2. Tracking ID's without Start Date & End Date - due to which Events posted in the past get re-triggered for EH's created in Future with same Tracking ID, causing data inconsistencies
  3. All Task Logging switched on, causing billion+ entries in EH_TASK, forcing the client to do Partitioning in the database to handle the table size.
  4. BAPI COMMIT being used inside the RULE SET causing data inconsistencies and short dumps
  5. Event Generation within the Rule Sets causing short dumps
  6. No Queuing process followed and hence same the EH is called multiple times at the same moment causing data inconsistencies

Please feel free to comment on other issues that you have seen in your implementations.

Minimizing Data Maintenance in SAP Distribution Channels and Divisions

SAP ERP is a powerful tool. You can do so much with it, it’s tempting to dive into the complexity and use features just for their own sake. But that’s not a good way to set up your SAP. Rather, you need to let business needs drive your SAP complexity.

Today, we’ll be talking about SAP distribution channels and divisions and how you can set them up for minimal data maintenance. We’ll also talk about what this means for an SAP e-commerce integration--something to consider even if you aren’t currently doing e-commerce. Key Takeaways From SAP's Q3

Read full article here "In continuation with a strong first half of the year, software giant SAP continued its impressive performance in Q3. Third quarter revenues grew 4% over the prior year period to $6.6 billion and were in line with the market expectations. Aided by a phenomenal increase in new cloud bookings, revenues from cloud business continued to be the primary growth driver. The cloud and software gross margins saw a marginal decline, but a substantial improvement in the services gross margin led to a slight improvement in overall margins. We expect cloud margins to continue declining in the near term, as the company faces tough competition from software behemoths like Microsoft, Oracle and Salesforce. Operating profit and EPS grew by 19% and 35% year-over-year respectively, due to lower share-based compensation, acquisition-related charges and restructuring costs. While the revenue growth was seen across all business segments, SAP’s Cloud business, aided by a phenomenal increase in new bookings, was the standout performer. The company continued its dominance in the Enterprise Resource Planning software market, with more than 600 customers adopting its S/4HANA platform in the quarter, taking the overall count to over 6,900 customers. This should assuage some investor concerns about the long term value of this platform, the sheer power of which is reflected in its cost. Moreover, with 80% of its customers still using the earlier platform and expected to shift to the newer one in the near future, there is tremendous potential which the company expects to tap."

Square Partners With SAP to embed Square payments in to SAP Business One

Square Partners With SAP (Read full article) "In Square Inc.'s (NYSE: SQ) second-quarter conference call, CEO Jack Dorsey promised that the company was constantly looking for ways it could "accelerate and deepen" its offerings to its customers. One of the ways the company has recently focused on in order to accomplish this goal is to embed its payment processing into existing business software platforms through partnerships. Earlier this quarter, Square partnered with Eventbrite, the popular live event-planning platform.
More recently, Square announced another partnership, this time with SAP SE (NYSE: SAP), the German-based enterprise application software provider. Under the terms of the deal, announced on Square's corporate blog, Square's payment processing and financial services will now be integrated with SAP's Business One platform. SAP Business One is a software platform that provides small and medium-sized retailers with a variety of back-office business services, including accounting, project management, and human resources. With the integration of the two companies' services, businesses will now be able to view their sales and payment data with "one holistic view."

SAP Track and Trace Solution — Part 2: Inbound Logistics

In the first part of this article series, I described what Track and Trace is and how it relates to outbound logistics; if you missed it, check it out here. In this article, I will discus how we can provide full visibility into the inbound logistics process by leveraging SAP’s Event Management module and EDI carrier status notifications. Organizations that place purchase orders (PO) for their suppliers or manufacturers have a very real need to make sure that the product arrives at the intended destination on the date that it was requested and promised. Scheduling receiving resources and ability to meet customer demand, all rely on the product getting to the warehouse when it was scheduled to be there.

  • Raises midpoint of 2017 revenue, profit guidance
SAP, Europe's most valuable technology company, reported that third-quarter revenue growth slowed after a strong first half and profits came up just short of analysts' expectations.

SAP EM Knowledge Bites 10 - Deciding on what parameters to use

In our last blog we spoke about the sizing considerations to take in to account for an SAP EM server. Now let’s go in to one of the most asked question in SAP Event Management – “Which type of the 4 available parameters should we use? Firstly, what are the 4 parameters that we are talking about?

SAP EM Knowledge Bites 9 - The sizing of an SAP EM server

In our last blog we walked through what was made available in each of the major SAP EM releases. Now let’s take a look at what to consider when sizing an SAP EM server.
Sizing a server to handle the processing for SAP EM is important.  Potentially a large amount of data can be processed by the SAP EM system in a very short period of time.  Sizing is impacted by both business and technology components.  The number of users and number of processes covered will have an impact on the size of machine required. The SAP Standard Application Benchmarks and Scalability Tests located at http://www.sap.com/benchmark can be used to determine sizing detail.

SAP EM knowledge Bites 5 - Events vs. Messages

In our last blog we discussed the different types of events that SAP EM deals with. Now it’s time to delve a little deeper and look in to event messages as they relate to events. SAP EM makes the distinction between events and event messages. The difference is subtle yet very significant and compelling.
An event is the recording of “something that occurs in a certain place during a particular interval of time”.   An example of an event would be a post goods issue (PGI) occurring in Warehouse A at 3:00 PM (See No. 4 in Figure 1).  A plan for the event is stored in SAP EM, and the event is measured against this plan.  ‘The Plan’ states: ‘the PGI event should happen at Warehouse A between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM’ (See No. 1 in Figure 1).  In this example, the event is considered a regular event.

SAP EM Knowledge Bites 4 - Describing SAP EM Events

In our previous blog we discussed the differences between SAP EM and Document Flow. Now it’s time to start to dive in to the details of SAP Event Management and whereas could we start, other than to describe an event?

Events can be divided into two different types (actual vs. planned), which can then be grouped into four categories. Actual Event vs. Planned Event

SAP EM Tip: Sample code for coding your own rule set activities

Here is the code snippets but the full document with all the table details is located for download here.

SAP EM Knowledge Bites 3 - SAP EM as compared to Document Flow

In our previous blog we described where SAP EM fitted in to the SAP solution stack. In this blog we discuss the differences between document flow and SAP EM. We often get asked what the difference is or we hear the following “SAP EM is just glorified document flow”…
SAP EM is often utilized in conjunction with SAP Document Flow.  Document flow shows the transactions related to the business document, as they are being created by the SAP system.  A typical document flow for an order-to-cash scenario will progress as follows: Sales Order -> Delivery -> PGI -> Billing Document -> Accounting Document.  Although SAP EM can easily provide the same view to the applicable business process using document flow, it allows for a few subtler, yet powerful differences.

SAP EM Knowledge Bites 2 - SAP EM as part of the Extended Supply Chain

In our first blog, We spelled out what SAP Event Management covers, what it is and what it is not. (Read here) It’s now time to look at SAP EM and see where it fits in to the bigger picture.

Where does SAP EM fit in to SAP’s overall solution landscape

Over the years SAP has moved the SAP EM solution across many vertical and horizontal solutions.  Originally written as a component of the Railcar Management System, SAP EM was called Supply Chain Event Management (SCEM).  SCEM was adapted to a generic solution and became an add-on component that other solutions could use.  Also known as SAP’s Track and Trace solution, it was a part of the “Supply Chain Integrity” stack.

SAP EM TIP: Post-Processing Activity in Rule Set

With SAP EM 9.2 SP06 a new activity type “Post Processing Activity” has been introduced. It can be used to execute certain activities once instead of multiple times when processing event messages.

Only one post processing activity can be assigned to each rule set and it will be executed exactly once after rule set processing is done. This allows the EM developer to trigger follow-up activities in a mass enabled way instead of triggering the single action possibly multiple times during rule set processing. To make this work rule set activities which are executed during the rule set processing have to collect all data that is necessary for the post processing activity instead of triggering the actions itself. Check in this SAP document to see how to do it: Post Processing Activity to boost performance of EM – TM integration

SAP point-of-sale systems were totally hackable with $25 kit

Researchers able to hijack server and steal card details

Point-of-Sale systems from SAP had a vulnerability that allowed them to be hacked using a $25 Raspberry Pi or similar device, according to research unveiled at the Hack in the Box conference in Singapore last week.

Critical vulnerabilities in SAP's POS – since resolved – created a means for hackers not only to steal customers' card data but to gain unfettered control over the server, enabling them to change prices of goods with the help of a simple device, according to ERPScan.

SAP developed a patch after being alerted to the problem by ERPScan in April, allowing the enterprise app security specialists to go public with their discovery last week.

The root cause of the problem was that pre-patch SAP POS Xpress Server systems failed to perform any authentication checks for critical functionality that requires user identity. As a result, administrative and other privileged functions could be accessed without any authentication.

SAP to join Hyperledger community, SAP Ariba to build new capabilities into applications and Ariba Network to transform global supply chains

LAS VEGAS, NV – March 22, 2017 – Blockchain is among the most disruptive technologies of the day. From banking and insurance to agriculture, energy, healthcare, and media, it is shaking-up entire industries and is about to transform global supply chains, thanks to SAP Ariba. The company today unveiled plans to leverage blockchain across its cloud-based applications and business network to upend the way goods and services are traded.

At its core, blockchain is a digital ledger that can be used to drive business processes involving multiple parties. “One of the things blockchain does is facilitate greater visibility and trust,” Fox said. “In embedding it across our applications and network, we can enable supply chains that are smarter, faster and more transparent from sourcing all the way through settlement.”

Key steps to scope a SAP Business Workflow solution

What questions should be asked when defining a workflow relevant business process?

Listed below are questions that need to be asked and answered for each step / task of the process.

Thursday, August 17, 2017

Leverage SAP to track shipments

If your business involves selling product then inevitably you need to move that product, whether it be from your suppliers to you, or from you to your customers. If that is the case then you will also be interested in knowing how those movements, or shipments, are doing.

If they are experiencing a delay then it could potentially impact the promise you made to your customer... If the goods are delayed on route to your warehouse then you could potentially impact the plan for the warehouse folks who may have arranged a special shift to receive the goods in...

Wouldn't it be nice to know that the plan that was laid out up front was being followed? We can't force our suppliers to comply but there are ways to measure compliance and react to deviations to the plan just as soon as you are made aware of them. How can we accomplish that?

WHITEPAPER: Understanding the 10 EDI messages critical to deploying "Best in Class" Procure to Pay (PTP) SAP EDI

I have seen many, many EDI implementations in this space over the years and have yet to come by a single company that has adopted all of the good features available in SAP to bring real value in to the PTP process. In each part of the process, described below, I will highlight exactly what the purpose is for each EDI message or functionality and highlight the benefits for implementing it in the mentioned fashion.

Below, I list the PTP process for a typical replenishment PO where we procure stock via a Purchase Order (PO) to a supplier who delivers the product to our warehouse using one of our 3rd party carriers. The nuances around freight forwarding, drop ship and make to order scenarios are not covered here but are addressed using 90% of these same techniques as well.

TIP: Limiting Material Master field and view access

To configure the limiting of fields / views in the Material Master go to:

Logistic General -> Material Master -> Configuring Material Master

Create a user specific Screen sequence.

You can restrict the maintenance of certain views by auth. object M_MATE_STA

You can create a transaction variant for MM02 using transaction in SHD0. Therein you can keep any field you want for a particular user to be non changeable mode (I.e. display only). Then assign that transaction variant to the applicable user.

Similary create another transaction variant for any other user and assign the user to that transaction variant using the same SHD0 transaction (Standard variant tab).

NEWS: Oracle's Booming Cloud Business Could Rip And Replace SAP As #1 In Apps

CLOUD WARS – Cloud computing, which has already triggered massive disruptions across industries in business models and traditional pecking-orders, is giving Oracle Corp. a once-in-a-generation chance to displace arch-enemy SAP as the world leader in enterprise applications.
For decades, SAP has been the world leader in enterprise applications and Oracle has been the front-runner in enterprise databases, with both companies retaining their leadership positions in spite of the seismic shifts in the industry caused by the moves from mainframes to minicomputers to client-server to the Internet.
Oracle's recent surge in cloud-applications revenue - it sold $1 billion in SaaS apps during the quarter ended May 31 and $3.4 billion for the year give it a legitimate chance to overtake SAP as the world's #1 provider of enterprise applications, particularly in the massive cloud ERP market.
In the combined category of on-premise apps plus cloud apps, it's still not very close as SAP's revenue for that category doubles that of Oracle for the corresponding set of products and services:
  • Oracle: For the 3 months ending May 31, it reported combined applications revenue of $2.86 billion: $964 million for SaaS apps and $1.9 billion for on-premise (see full details on page 10 of the Oracle press release).
  • SAP: For the 3 months ending June 30, it reported combined applications revenue for cloud plus on-premise of $5.61 billion (see full details on page 7 of the SAP press release).

SAP is expanding its business for SMB and channel customers

The Germany-based software company moved into a new office in Tempe, Arizona, on July 25. The company brought physical operations to the Phoenix area due to the strong presence of startups. The vast majority (four in five) of SAP’s 355,000 customers are SMBs.

“We’ve been working in the SMB space for a very long time, with 80 percent of our customers being in the space, but it’s evolving,” said Christine Gavin-Johnson, vice president of commercial and channel sales for SAP North America. “Because new companies are showing up every day.”

There are approximately 200 employees in the facility Johnson tells Channel Partners that her company plans to add 150 seats to the Tempe office over the next three to five years. They will specialize mainly in sales, and some will be involved with the channel. SAP has approximately 16,000 worldwide partners.

NEWS: SAP Says Restrictions on New Recruitment not a General Hiring Freeze

German business software company SAP denied a media report on Friday that said it has imposed a complete freeze on recruitment in order to meet financial targets this year, while reiterating that it had restricted new hirings in some areas.

Business magazine WirtschaftsWoche said on Friday that SAP had instituted a cost-savings program to control infrastructure spending, corporate purchasing and business travel that was not tied directly to generating sales.

SAP continued to hire new employees in development and sales while reining in on other types of recruitment as well as non-essential travel, the company said. "This is in no way a general hiring freeze," an SAP spokesman said.

WirtschaftsWoche said it obtained a leaked document, marked "strictly confidential" spelling out SAP 's plan, which it said had been decided on July 15 by the company's executive board.
During its quarterly investor call in July CFO Luka Mucic said SAP would hold back on incremental hiring after increasing its overall workforce by 3,000 in the first half of 2017 and 7,000 in the past year to 87,114 in June.

Choosing SAP HR module complicated by S/4HANA, SuccessFactors options

Five years ago, SAP made a major addition to its human capital management portfolio by buying SuccessFactors, one of the biggest vendors of HCM software as a service. But with human resource features starting to appear in SAP's next-generation ERP system, S/4HANA, what's the right SAP HR module to buy?
In a podcast, TechTarget contributor Luke Marson, who co-founded a consultancy that specializes in SuccessFactors implementations, offers advice on choosing an SAP HR module.
"If you're looking for core HR with S/4HANA, Employee Central would be the HR system you would look at," Marson says. "They're designed to integrate together and work together, and that's the long-term roadmap for SAP."
The choice is different, however, for organizations that are already running the on-premises SAP HR module, SAP HCM. They can still use S/4HANA with the on-premises HCM, he says.
Integration issues vary, too. Marson says the integration tools for sharing data between S/4HANA and Employee Central are better than those for Employee Central and SAP ERP (part of Business Suite, S/4HANA's predecessor). In contrast, the on-premises SAP HR module and finance module are "very tightly coupled," and run in the same software instance.

SAP Ariba: No turning back as procurement goes digital | Procurement | Supply Chain Digital

The new age of digital is fundamentally reinventing business processes, from operations to customer engagement and more. A key driver behind this shift is the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 creating reams of data that allow decision makers to get the information they need, anytime and anywhere.

Accompanying this mass of data, the evolution of advanced analytics is accelerating decision making without any adverse effect on accuracy or performance quality. At the same time, business networks are creating highly efficient levels of collaboration that enhance productivity and generate value from data, regardless of where employees are located.

Procurement professionals have long been the unsung heroes of helping businesses adapt to these changes, tasked with reducing costs and ensuring savings are realised. But the most innovative among them are utilising new technologies like self-service portals, mobile apps and cloud or social collaboration tools to streamline processes, manage spend and simplify traditionally complex purchasing experiences. The end result is empowering buyers to comply with internal policies and best practices, while keeping costs down and raising the strategic value of every purchase.

Procurement organisations are more than comfortable with delivering buying experiences and supply chains that are fast, simple, sustainable, and low risk. But the key target here is to add value to the delivery of services and goods to customers. This is the future of procurement.

SAP Ariba and Mercateo announce "game-changing" spot buy partnership | Procurement | Supply Chain Digital

SAP Ariba and Mercateo have announced a new partnership which will see the companies combine expertise and resources in what is being described as a “game changer” for the spot-buying market.
Combating B2B tail spend is a challenge for all companies with cross-border trade in Europe presenting its own hurdles, particularly when it comes to invoicing.
SAP Ariba’s Tony Alvarez admitted as much and says that Mercateo’s Unite, which is a neutral platform allowing sellers to put up content to show buyers, made it a no-brainer to team up with the German company.
Alvarez, who is a General Manager for SAP Ariba spot buying services said: “When I saw what Mercateo had to offer in terms of the platform, it was a case of ‘guess what I’m looking for!’

Knoa Helps Accelerate Westcon-Comstors Global Rollout Of SAP ERP With SAP UEM By Knoa

Knoa Software, a leading provider of user experience management (UEM) software, today announced that Westcon-Comstor, the leading value-added global distributor of security, unified communications, network infrastructure and data center solutions, used SAP® User Experience Management (SAP UEM) by Knoa to assist with its global rollout of the SAP ERP application to 4,000 employees in 54 countries. The SAP UEM application provides visibility into software usage, enabling Westcon-Comstor to monitor and analyze user activity and system performance, and understand training needs.

Westcon-Comstor began using SAP UEM in 2014, shortly after kicking off its SAP ERP global rollout. It found SAP UEM especially useful in identifying transaction codes that were causing bandwidth issues and delays; this insight enabled the company to clean up the custom code and increase productivity.

“A global implementation was made easier thanks to the tools that the software has been able to provide," said Andy Feehan, Organizational Change Management and Training, Westcon-Comstor. "The reports that SAP UEM provides help leadership make calculated decisions based on facts.”

Knoa Software is an SAP partner whose user experience management solution is resold by SAP as an SAP Solution Extension. SAP UEM sheds light on application usage, user adoption and workflows, helping customers protect and maximize investments in SAP applications and upgrades.

“We are proud that our solution helped to ensure the success of this massive global rollout,” said Brian Berns, CEO of Knoa Software. “Westcon-Comstor is an impressive company and excellent partner that understands how to get the greatest benefit out of its SAP solutions. SAP Ariba and Samasource join forces to eradicate child exploitation in the supply chain | SCM | Supply Chain Digital

SAP Ariba has teamed up with nonprofit Samasource to ensure that child labor within the supply chain becomes a thing of the past.

The two companies have joined forces to stamp out poverty and drive fair labor practices across global supply chains by leveraging the power of technology and digital networks.

Founded in 2008, Samasource is a nonprofit social enterprise dedicated to lifting people out of poverty by providing training and access to dignified digital work through a process called “impact sourcing”, which is the practice of hiring people at the bottom of the pyramid, giving them access to earning a living wage, allowing them to transform their quality of life on their own terms.

For SAP Ariba, which works with 2.8 million companies in 190 countries worldwide, Samasource seemed like the ideal partner to work with to combat the exploitation of poverty within the supply chain and together they believe they have the transparency to resolve what is being described as "one of the biggest issues in the supply chain today."

Alicia Tillman, Chief Marketing Officer of SAP Ariba said: “At SAP Ariba, we firmly believe that one of the most effective ways to eradicate poverty is through free markets.

"Collectively, the Global 2000 spend $12 trillion on goods and services annually. These companies – more than 75 percent of which are connected to the Ariba Network - have the buying power to ensure they provide fair labor practices across their supply chains. And this is exactly what we, in collaboration with Samasource, hope to inspire them to do.

Why is the last mile so inefficient? | Supply Chain Dive

Highly customized service, complex routes and various stakeholders make perfecting the last mile a challenge

Editor's Note: This article is part of a series on perfecting last-mile delivery. All stories in this series can be found here.

The last mile is extremely inefficient. It is the final frontier of logistics, a cost so habitual yet burdensome to supply chains that it begs for futuristic ideas, e.g. drones, flying warehouses or self-driving cars, to capture our imaginations.

Such dreams of a seamless delivery experience are hardly new. The United States Postal Service has been trying to perfect its process for centuries; and United Parcel Service (UPS) and FedEx, for decades. Only now, the digital age has pulled last-mile delivery to the forefront of retailers' minds as e-commerce and the Amazon effect require them to offer fast and free delivery, or become uncompetitive.

Consequently, the industry returns to an age-old question: How can we perfect this process? Except this time, the technology and intent to do so may finally be in alignment.

Dive brief:

  • Improving technology and the need for greater supply chain connectivity is making such linkages more important, but also helping companies: 60% say data integration has improved their customer service levels, and 75% are confident they can process most inbound EDI/XML connections without a human touch.
