Wipro ban latest blow to India

Rhys Blakely | January 13, 2009

Article from:  Times Online

THE credibility of Indian corporate governance was dealt another blow when Wipro, the country's third-largest outsourcing company, admitted that it had been blacklisted from bidding for contracts by the World Bank.

The disclosure comes less than a week after B. Ramalinga Raju, the founder and former chairman of Satyam, India's fourth-largest outsourcer, confessed to orchestrating a $US1 billion ($1.4 billion) fraud over several years by inflating the company's profits and assets.

The Satyam scandal, India's biggest corporate fraud, has rocked global confidence in India's corporate governance regimes.

Mr Raju and his brother, Rama Raju, have been charged with criminal conspiracy and forgery and are being held in prison in the southern city of Hyderabad along with Vadlamani Srinivas, Satyam's chief financial officer.

Shares in Wipro, which employs more than 95,000 people, fell more than 12 per cent after the World Bank said that the group had been banned from working with the institution for "providing improper benefits to bank staff".

Outsourcing the American Way - Jon Reed Interviews Chris Carter

Jon Reed notes: A couple of years ago, CCI CEO Chris Carter had seen enough. Too many of his friends were unable to find SAP consulting work, despite their years of service and commitment to the SAP field. More and more, the phenomenon of "outsourcing" seemed to be applying rate pressure and creating an employment market that was not viable for U.S-based SAP consultants. Chris knew he had to do something, but he realized that the political solutions were too abstract and unrealistic. So he found a way to offer outsourcing as part of his firm's service offerings, but with a twist - all the jobs would stay in America and be staffed by U.S.-based consultants. Chris' innovative approach to outsourcing has attracted the attention of legislators and news reporters who are looking for new solutions to this difficult economic and social issue.

US companies coming back to USA due to Off-shore pains

CCI helps transition back to USA based SAP Labor

Milwaukee, WI – September 28, 2004– CCI, today announced an agreement, to support US based SAP firms who are wanting to bring their work BACK to the USA with their American based SAP Operations practice.

"Why would a firm not choose US-Sourcing® over Off-Shoring when the cost is at least 10% less to stay in the USA based on data from the Gartner Group? We continue to grow and to strengthen our US-Sourcing®," said Christopher M. Carter, CEO of CCI. "By assisting companies with our American Based SAP solutions, and in particular our operations support, we can further support their needs for a progressive, effective SAP system right here in the USA.”

Managing an offshore contract, for example, increases the cost by six to ten percent, according to industry figures. Other extras include productivity lags, ramp up expenses, and "dead" money towards those laid off at home. Due to the piled up costs, many companies are bringing their operations back to the USA, to regain control of data and lower costs, hence they are looking to CCI for help.

“Our number one goal for CCI is to make sure every SAP company is getting the best service and support from an American based company who truly cares about their SAP environment, their company and their success, and now we are showing more firms the same true great American based support.” Stated Carter.

Democrats take outsourcing tour to India

In January, two of the most influential Indian trade lobbies subsidized a nine-day, five-city trip for a United States Congressional Delegation to discuss political, defense, health and economic ties between India and the United States.

One of the main topics of discussion for the 11-member Delegation was India’s booming high-tech business and job outsourcing industry. The Delegation, comprised of 10 Democratic Congress members and one Republican Senator, was sponsored by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and India’s National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), groups which lobby on behalf of outsourcing work to India.

According to travel disclosure forms filed in the Office of Congressional Travel, the Confederation of Indian Industry reimbursed Delegation members as much as $13,000 for trip expenses. Total trip expenses for the Delegation’s nine days in India ran over $115,000 (based on nine of the members’ travel disclosure forms).
